Some Tuesday Nuggets for YOU
Written by Mike on June 24, 2008 – 6:36 pm - 60 viewsA good read from the Houston Chronicle in two parts on the Dash Express. Take a look here for part one. Here’s part deux. He seems to have experienced some local routing issues, but I have never experienced any quirky routes cause by traffic conditions.
For example, my short drive to work involves going up Waugh Drive to Memorial, then into downtown and to the Mighty Houston Chronicle. It’s quick, there are a minimal number of stoplights and traffic is relatively light. It’s the route Google Maps recommends. But the Dash Express keeps wanting me to cut over to Montrose, then take the much-slower Allen Parkway, which puts into downtown south of my destination. I then must come up stoplight-dotted Louisiana or Travis streets.
Worth a read.
Dash Vids Dept: A good video about the Dash from Somewhatfrank.com. Chris Butler from Dash explains some of the features and apps available on the Dash Express. The video is from a developers conference, and you can watch it here.
Are You Happy Dept: From the always good gpsreview.net …Survey information concerning Dash user satisfaction. As a Dash user– are you happy?? See if you are, here!
That’s it for today, kids!
Hasta la Bye-bye!

Trippin’ on Dash
Written by Mike on June 19, 2008 – 1:27 pm - 58 viewsSome people’s thoughts on Dash over the past few days….
At Bloomberg, Grace Aquino writes that Dash has not reached its full potential yet, and needs more units to fulfill its traffic capabilities. I agree. I still think I am the only one in my area trucking around with the unit. The only time I ever encounter any “solid” colored traffic lines is on major highways and interstates. To the best of my recollection, I don’t believe I have ever come across a solid colored line on any other road…
Random Rage is in the midst of a multi part driver write-up about his driving experiences with his Dash. Here is part one…. here is part two… and the rest are still to be written. Keep checking back. Good stuff.
Seacrest…out.

A Dash Review and House of Cards
Written by Mike on May 2, 2008 – 10:20 pm - 76 viewsHi folks. Some notes for today…
Two-Way Dept: Seems that OEM two-way data PNDs have been around for a while… at least in Japan. I came across this article with some information about the expected boom in growth of two-way PND devices, however it doesn’t really give specifics on current devices. Expectation is that the OEM market will become a growing and driving factor in the future of this type of technology. Seems pretty logical that this concept will be adapted in that fashion. It gives an ongoing revenue stream to car manufacturers… get your hands deeper in someones pockets (aka OnStar) …and why not make more money.
Review Seekers Dept: Click Here for a Dash Express review from Geardiary.com in which the author makes a few interesting points. He brings up the issue of privacy concerns regarding your Dash “trail.” This thought had occurred to me as well, as I watched my singular path being recorded around my area. It appears to me, though, Dash’s traffic trace does not include neighborhood streets, but regardless, I guess you could search around on your Dash and find peoples driving routes in certain areas. Additionally, he has an excellent point about the “sharing” of your traffic data if you are no longer (or not) a subscriber. Is it still happening? And– are they still using you to harvest information without the benefit of you receiving the traffic data? Unknown. My hunch would be that they don’t get the GSM bandwidth for free…and as such part of your monthly fee goes to pay for that airtime to wireless carriers. So, my gut feeling is that “no pay-eee no trace-eee.” But that can depend on the type of arrangement they have with wireless carriers (e.g. bulk buying of chunks of bandwidth.)
Radiohead is genius Dept: …and why not. Radiohead did a great version of House of Cards on Conan the other night. Take a look:
