Some Tuesday Nuggets for YOU

Written by Mike on June 24, 2008 – 6:36 pm - 60 views

A good read from the Houston Chronicle in two parts on the Dash Express.  Take a look here for part one.  Here’s part deux.  He seems to have experienced some local routing issues, but I have never experienced any quirky routes cause by traffic conditions.

For example, my short drive to work involves going up Waugh Drive to Memorial, then into downtown and to the Mighty Houston Chronicle. It’s quick, there are a minimal number of stoplights and traffic is relatively light. It’s the route Google Maps recommends. But the Dash Express keeps wanting me to cut over to Montrose, then take the much-slower Allen Parkway, which puts into downtown south of my destination. I then must come up stoplight-dotted Louisiana or Travis streets.

Worth a read.

Dash Vids Dept: A good video about the Dash from Somewhatfrank.com.   Chris Butler from Dash explains some of the features and apps available on the Dash Express.  The video is from a developers conference, and you can watch it here.

Are You Happy Dept: From the always good gpsreview.net …Survey information concerning Dash user satisfaction. As a Dash user– are you happy??  See if you are, here!

That’s it for today, kids!

Hasta la Bye-bye!

Another Trapster and Baktrax Apps Video

Written by Mike on May 20, 2008 – 1:46 pm - 46 views

I found these demo videos for some of the Dash applications that are now available for download.  The first is the Baktrax demo.  The BakTrax app, created by MediaGuide, uses gps to find recent playlists of radio stations in your area (or anywhere else you want to plug in to the gps.)  I couldn’t find a web page directly related to this product, but it looks like a similar app is available for Iphone and can be viewed here, or another link pointed here– however, I clicked around and didn’t seem to get anywhere…

Would I use this?… probably not.  Maybe, if you are in an area you are unfamiliar with and are trying to get your daily AOR fix–

Here is a short video, again, of the Trapster app, but I’m not sure if the focus of the video is the application or the guy roaring around in the Ferrari….hmmm, but these guys look like they’re having fun.  I’ll watch a speedy car video.  Why not get the Tifosi on your side?

Dash Express only $299 at Amazon!

These guys must be up for fun.  They have some speedy videos on their site… The only thing is… who buys their GT3 in yellow??? Mine is rizzo, baby…

Getting Outlook Calendar on Your Dash Express

Written by Mike on May 16, 2008 – 3:12 pm - 160 views

Hmmm… weren’t you thinking, wouldn’t it be really cool if I could get my Outlook calendar on my Dash… Well, apparently you weren’t the only one thinking that– and YES you can! How, dear boy, you ask? Well, thanks to the people at FUNAMBOL you can do just that using your Dash Express and the myFUNAMBOL portal. Log into the MyDash portal, search for calendar, create your account at FUNAMBOL and have your Outlook calendar events zipped right to your Dash. Righteous. Take a peek below for details:

Nice, huh? Since Dash has opened its API to developers, expect a bunch of new applications for the device to be popping up in the near future. Those of you with some time can read about it here, or here, or maybe even here.

One of these new apps which I’m sure will be a big hit is Trapster. I only took a real brief look at this, but this application lets users report speed traps and red light cams. Imagine the value of having one of those alerts pops up as you are zipping down the interstate. Sound useful?

What? You haven’t seen enough videos today? OK, here’s one more from Trapster. This demo does not include the Dash Express, however it gives an overview of how the system works.

That it. Have a great weekend!

Dash Express Traffic Demo

Written by Mike on April 21, 2008 – 11:15 pm - 40 views

Welcome.  I’ve been fighting a bug the past few days…just as the weather has been improving and finally getting warmer here in the East, I’ve been stuck inside.  Blah.  What a great feeling to get out and drive with the top down for the first time last week, though.

Today I was feeling better and did a quick video to show how the traffic data appears on the Express.  Its short- and cheesy- and I couldn’t get my camera to focus on the screen real well so you get an extra BONUS- its also blurry.  I spare no production expense.  For those who are interested, however, you can get a quick look how traffic data appears on the device.  The display is in night mode to help the traffic data stand out a litle better.

Um, Enjoy? :-)
